[You feel it before you hear it: an uncanny sensation like you aren't alone, like someone just out of sight has fixed their attention on you.

They're not hiding, though. The Ferryman is simply speaking, directly into all of your minds, as clear as if they were standing right beside you.]

It's starting.

Sorry. Was hoping you'd all have more time to rest before we got going. But when it's time, it's time.

We're going to Cross. Not now, but soon. You'll feel it when the moment gets here. And you need to be ready for what that means, when it does.

It's a dangerous journey. There's still a lot of yourself left to lose, even if it doesn't feel like it now. That's my role here. I can guide you through it. Keep you safe.

There's a cost. You'll have to give something up, a part of your life Before. A face. A feeling. A memory. That's your toll to Cross. You pay it to me, and you won't get it back.

You don't have to pay. But if you're not with me, I can't keep you safe. You'll have to make The Crossing on your own. And if you do, there's a chance you lose a whole lot more than what the toll is asking from you.

There's some time left still. You don't need to decide now. But you do need to decide. You'll find out soon what sort of toll The Crossing is asking for, this time around.

Come find me if you want to talk. I'll be where I always am.

[The connection is tenuous; message delivered, The Ferryman's voice fades from your mind. If you're quick, and you concentrate, you might be able to grab on long enough to ask a question or two more.

Otherwise, all that remains is the object that purports to connect you with the other souls, all tasked with making the same decision. Whether it's a page or a screen, there's a new message for you:]

A toll to be levied for safe passage
from the cavern to ǝɹǝɥʍǝsʅǝ

Hear a voice that causes you pain
words spoken with rage or grief or envy
fueled by hate or love or suffering

offer it to The Ferryman
and let go

[ ooc | And we're off! Remember: The Ferryman is (for now!) the only one who can communicate to everyone via voice; the rest of you are stuck with text! The only exception is if characters try to hijack the fading connection to talk with The Ferryman one-on-one; there's a header for those questions here.

Otherwise, consider this a mingle! Chat, threadhop, go nuts. ]

Text (I know it’s an Omori pic, but same feel XD)

[Sunny certainly didn’t need the introduction but… oh, he guessed these devices didn’t have usernames. That was more anonymous than a game of Blackjack on his computer then.

Still, good for Kel to make the distinction - ‘all in orange,’ as Sunny himself was still wearing the scrap of fabric from his friend’s shirt over his missing eye.

The teen wasn’t sure how he felt about a giant meetup though. Just the thought had something akin to cold sweat trailing down his back.]

Not… the River…

[Accompanying the reply was an approximation of a thumbs up (or whatever was close to it, these devices were difficult to handle, and they seemed to vary from person to person). Sunny was casting his own vote for location, hoping he didn’t really have to explain why.]

[He may not know who's on the other side, but at the same time? He takes in the vote.]

Gotcha, buddy. City good for you? We may find a place and gather together enough chairs!

[Right, the fact that there isn’t a name or a picture associated with his message… that feeling of anonymity sends equal parts thrill and dread through him. As much as Sunny figured staying in the room (if wasn’t ‘his’ room, he couldn’t say that) would be more comfortable… now he had apparently committed himself.]

[His next reply came a little less fragmented. If no one knew who he was… then maybe it would be easier to talk?]

Should be fine. Chairs aren’t a problem. Used to sitting.

[Whatever that meant. Really it was more Sunny was used to laying in his bed, while - as Omori - he would sit aimlessly on the ground… Till that door opened. Best not to think of that, Omori and Headspace were nowhere near him right now.]

[Oh, how shameless, hiding your identity from the bro who quite literally died for you. Honestly, though, he'd be proud of Sunny... trying. As everyone knows, Kel is a specialized 'cheerleader' kind of friend, ready to support no matter what.]

I'm still going to try to make the place a bit comfortable. Even if we don't technically need amenities and stuff, it doesn't mean we shouldn't indulge in good stuff. Right?

[Sunny has many problems. Hiding his identity from a childhood friend? Wasn’t one of them… until today. Still, he doesn’t see the harm in it.

Until, looking at Kel’s message, he doesn’t really know how to respond. Typical Kel, wanting to bring the atmosphere in the room to a more comfortable temperature (so to speak)… even if they were dead.

How would someone else respond? Sunny didn’t know, biting his lip in thought. How… how would Omori have responded?

That got Sunny thinking. Omori… would have agreed, in some form, even if it was just by omission of not saying anything else. He would nod silently, or stand there in that overly neutral position, not necessarily arguing against the fact. His other Headspace friends probably would have agreed, in one way or another… even if it might have caused a minor tussle between Kel and Aubrey over what ‘comfort’ meant (and how Mr. PlantEgg should be allowed to participate, too).

This is why, when a mildly absurd amount of time has passed, Kel simply gets another drawn Thumbs Up in response.]
