[You feel it before you hear it: an uncanny sensation like you aren't alone, like someone just out of sight has fixed their attention on you.

They're not hiding, though. The Ferryman is simply speaking, directly into all of your minds, as clear as if they were standing right beside you.]

It's starting.

Sorry. Was hoping you'd all have more time to rest before we got going. But when it's time, it's time.

We're going to Cross. Not now, but soon. You'll feel it when the moment gets here. And you need to be ready for what that means, when it does.

It's a dangerous journey. There's still a lot of yourself left to lose, even if it doesn't feel like it now. That's my role here. I can guide you through it. Keep you safe.

There's a cost. You'll have to give something up, a part of your life Before. A face. A feeling. A memory. That's your toll to Cross. You pay it to me, and you won't get it back.

You don't have to pay. But if you're not with me, I can't keep you safe. You'll have to make The Crossing on your own. And if you do, there's a chance you lose a whole lot more than what the toll is asking from you.

There's some time left still. You don't need to decide now. But you do need to decide. You'll find out soon what sort of toll The Crossing is asking for, this time around.

Come find me if you want to talk. I'll be where I always am.

[The connection is tenuous; message delivered, The Ferryman's voice fades from your mind. If you're quick, and you concentrate, you might be able to grab on long enough to ask a question or two more.

Otherwise, all that remains is the object that purports to connect you with the other souls, all tasked with making the same decision. Whether it's a page or a screen, there's a new message for you:]

A toll to be levied for safe passage
from the cavern to ǝɹǝɥʍǝsʅǝ

Hear a voice that causes you pain
words spoken with rage or grief or envy
fueled by hate or love or suffering

offer it to The Ferryman
and let go

[ ooc | And we're off! Remember: The Ferryman is (for now!) the only one who can communicate to everyone via voice; the rest of you are stuck with text! The only exception is if characters try to hijack the fading connection to talk with The Ferryman one-on-one; there's a header for those questions here.

Otherwise, consider this a mingle! Chat, threadhop, go nuts. ]

That's good, I think it might be a bad idea for you to be all by yourself. [Nagito pauses briefly before, in a rare moment, he catches onto what he said.] Ah--not that it's good that you or Kel-kun are dead, or anything like that! But you had someone to help you with your eye, and that's good.

[Nagito is already calculating in his head: he hasn't known Sunny for long, and doesn't know him well. His luck has been behaving itself, although Nagito isn't sure how death impacts his cycle, uncertain as to where he is. Still, this much should be fine. When Frieda asks Sunny to sit, Nagito will sit on his other side, though he's prepared to move if Kel wants to sit there.]

Everyone being so kind to Sunny is throwing him off XD it’s wonderful

[Oh, if only Nagito knew how true his words were: it was awful for Sunny to be by himself. It was what the teen feared the most, even if he couldn’t admit it. And yet… Sunny had subjected himself to four years of solitude. He really didn’t deserve anything else, this kindness that others here were showing him… they wouldn’t be so kind if they knew.

And that thought had Sunny’s throat tightening.

Nagito’s seemingly embarrassed bluster refocused him, his eye widening in what might have been surprise. Nagito was… concerned about that sort of thing? Right, he guessed it wasn’t normal to be as nonchalant about death as Sunny was currently.]

A-ah… um… [Stuttering, unsure of what to say… until Nagito mentioned his other eye. The teen’s hand reflexively moved to cover in… and the fabric was there.] …f-fine.

[The thought was delayed for sure. Would Nagito be able to tell that Sunny wasn’t offended or anything? If anything, it was just the teen’s usual awkwardness getting in the way… again. He seemed to settled somewhat as Nagito took the other seat beside him. Like that made him less worried about the potentials - like what if no one sat there, confirming Sunny’s fears? Or what if someone he didn’t know sat down? Would Sunny be forced to talk more? Thankfully, bless Nagito, he solved that line of worry.]

Nagito's been behaving so well so far

[personal profile] blindluck 2024-12-21 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Nagito can't be entirely sure as to the meaning of that "fine," but assumes it generally refers to the situation. His eye didn't seem very fine when Nagito saw it last, so it's probably not that--though maybe, relatively speaking, it's fine now? And if you're dead, does that sort of thing matter? Well, it's not as if Nagito has regrown his hand, either, and he's fine with that, so...]

You know, I wonder if it might not be a good idea to ask Ferryman-san about that eye, actually. [Because, now that he has spent maybe an unnecessary time thinking about missing body parts, he does know something about them!] It may not be relevant with us all being dead, but I'm pretty sure you're supposed to keep something in the socket. It's too bad it's just me here--I'm not very useful with medical situations. But it's to prevent infections, I believe...?

[He absolutely knows this, actually. He's heard Hinata-kun talk about it with Kuzuryu-kun. But he'd never be so presumptuous as to give direct medical advice! That's not his talent at all!]

[Sunny… didn’t know much about that. Medical situations. Most of the items that provided healing in his dreams were food - though he did know basic first aid and bandages.

Pretty sure a stabbed eye went far beyond basic first aid.

Nagito did have a point though. And maybe he had learned that from one of his associates he lived together with?

The nod Sunny gave in answer was tentative. It wasn’t a promise, but… the Ferryman had been kind so far. Maybe they would have an answer. Sunny would just… have to work up the courage to talk again. Writing out the request in his notebook for all to see definitely wasn’t something he had the courage to do.]
