It's one of the first and most necessary skills to hanging out with people who emphasize their interests over all else - not getting bogged down by the latest spoiler-filled infodump, nor trying to keep up with the details. Otherwise, one might just bring down the mood around a conversation about an anime he just doesn't share the enthusiasm for.]
